Data Storage
The Importance of Research Data Storage
Data is fundamental to research and with the advent of the so-called Big Data phenomenon, and global trends towards Open Data and Open Science, sound data storage and management is a key enabler of research innovation.
Research and academic institutions invest substantially in collecting and generating research data. As much as 80% of such investments are funded by public money and organisations are increasingly requiring their beneficiaries to share research data where feasible, thus, allowing more value to be derived from these assets. Storing research data is important for a number of other reasons: it provides a record of the data used in publications and in some cases, data are also have historical and cultural value. Research is becoming increasingly data-driven – even in
non-traditional disciplines such as the Arts, Social Sciences and History.
Data Management
How DIRISA ensures data integrity and secure data storage
Already deployed, is a Data Management Planning (DMP). This service will be complemented by functions that enable secure user registration as user. Once subscribed, users will be able to deposit data sets, set access and security options, discover relevant data, safely share data and prepare data for analytical processing on high performance computing resources.
Documentation and Support
A suite of documentation is provided to support and assist users. These range from an overview of DIRISA, to questions and answers about the use of specific tools and services.
Resources and links to sites providing documentation related to data intensive research and data management are provided in the Resources Page
